Never Been Kissed: The Charlotte Baird Story
Charlotte Baird has a unique story to tell. You see, at the age of 11 she decided to remain a virgin. Little did her family and friends know how determined Charlotte Baird was to keep her vow. This unconventional phenom drew inspiration from Sunday School classes and the convent school she attended growing up. "The nuns taught us that we should preserve our virginity until marriage and that the fashion for having sex outside marriage was not how it should be. But they didn't force their views on us. It seemed a sound doctrine to me. Of course, my convent education had an indelible impact on my commitment to chastity." Celebrating Celibacy By ChoiceIndeed it has had an impact. 25 years later, Charlotte Baird is still a virgin and proud of it. She says, "I think my age shocks people more than anything else. I know I am unusual. People are fascinated by my decision to stay celibate, but I'm happy with my choice. People find it hard to accept, but being celibate suits me. I am happy and lead a fulfilled life and I have never once wavered from my decision to preserve myself until I marry." I applaud Charlotte for her moral abstinence vow. Over the last few months, I have gotten a kick out of profiling abstinent celebrities, and not so abstinent celebrities. So it's a special treat to write about Charlotte Baird, an obscure actress (by my estimation) and a real woman who carries herself like a lady. What makes Charlotte so unique is she is celibate by choice, not for lack of opportunity. She's had her fair share of pursuers over the years. But her decision has not faltered. On first dates she courageously insists on telling the men who ask her out that she's a virgin and will remain so until marriage. Although admirable, this has not led to finding her one true love. Yet, Charlotte doesn't mind. She would rather men know upfront about her stance before anyone becomes emotionally attached. "I don't want to lead any man into the false impression that I am going to change my mind, because I'm not. But it's a lot to take on and it does put a man off if he thinks that sex isn't a possibility." Lonely, Frumpy, Eccentric? Never!Don't expect Charlotte Baird to become a lonely, frumpy, eccentric spinster living alone with 20 cats. She defies the cryptic stereotypes often thought of when women choose not to marry and start a family at a young age. Her full and active social life is a testament to that. She's an actress, writer, theater producer, and artist's agent. She practices martial arts and will soon take her black belt in Kung Fu. Charlotte has also had a number of theatre roles, she was in the 2000 movie 28 Days Later, and is writing a stage adaptation of an E.M. Forster short story. Most weekends are spent working on productions at her two local theaters. In the meantime, Charlotte's resolve has never wavered and has become more firm over the years. She's also observed, with sadness, as the culture has become more promiscuous. She empathizes with young people who have to navigate their way in a world that has lost it's moral compass. "I feel sorry for young people", she says. "There is a lot of pressure to behave in a certain way. They do it because everyone else is and they feel they should, too. Information isn't guidance. Telling people they can have contraceptives in school or giving them sex education at the age of five just isn't enough. What young people need is moral guidance - that is what is missing." I couldn't agree more.
