The BreakthroughIt was the break Detective Reese needed. He arrested Shawn, 18, and Trace, 17, with raping Tiffany and two of her friends who were also drugged and assaulted that night. For Tiffany and Roberta, it was a bittersweet victory. T.V. and local media headlines screamed: "Rape & Denial: Assault on Diamond Back Lake!" For the days and weeks leading up to the trial, it was a constant source of humiliation. During the trial, the whole town learned of what happened to Tiffany. All her classmates, distant relatives, even the 'crack heads' living on skid row seemed to know about her ordeal. Some of the kids who were at the lake didn’t believe her story. They watched how she drank, smoked, gave lap dances, and was showing off her body. They felt it was her fault she went to the lake, against her mother’s wishes. One girl who said she wasn't as drunk and high as her buddies proclaimed, "Rape? That's bull! She acted like a real live SKANK the whole night. Everybody there knows Tiffany got exactly what she wanted. No wonder Shawn and Trace's denial was so strong!" This girl, as well as others, believed Tiffany didn't have to drink and do drugs. If she hadn’t put herself in that situation, they reasoned, she wouldn’t have been too high to resist Shawn and Trace. Detective Reese and Tiffany's supporters disagreed. Even though Tiffany willingly went along with the happenings at the lake, she was underage and was given a drug that altered her actions even more. “Tiffany is guilty of bad judgment“, they said. “But Shawn and Trace are guilty of much more.” The AwakeningTiffany agrees with both sides. She blames herself for what happened and hates she let peer pressure determine her decisions. She wishes she could take it all back. Not coming straight home like her Mom wanted her to, drinking beer, and smoking pot led to her nightmare over the past few months. What’s Tiffany’s advice? She choked back tears and said: “You know, I lost my virginity and my innocence that night. Those are things I can never get back. It was supposed to be the best night of my life, now look at me. "After I told the police what happened to me, they said by law I had to get treated for my injuries. So, I went to the hospital for a rape kit, which was crazy painful.” “They took a pregnancy test, too. Too many days went by for birth control to make a difference. When the test came back, I found out I was pregnant. I’m having twins." "We didn’t know who the father was at the time since I was assaulted by two boys. So, Mom scraped together some money to pay for a paternity test. The results came back that Shawn is the father of one of my babies and Trace is the father of the other.” She begins to cry. "I didn't know anything like that could happen! My doctor said cases like this are rare, but they do occur." “I know Mom is soooo disappointed in me. She cries whenever she looks at me and thinks about what happened to me. She wants the babies placed for adoption. I don’t want to. I really want to keep my babies!” “But Mom said the best thing I can do for the twins is place them in a loving home with two parents who can care for them properly. I thought about it and...I guess that's the right thing to do.“ “I know how hard it was for Mom to raise me by herself and I don’t want to make her life any harder. You know, Shawn and Trace will spend a few years in prison and that‘s it. I might have to deal with this for the rest of my life!“ She begins to cry again. “What would I say to any girl out there who thinks it’s hot to drink, do drugs, and have sex? Look at what my decisions have done to me. My life is scarred and it may take a lifetime to get over this.” She adds, “Please don’t do what I did and don’t think it can’t happen to you.“
